Demystifying ‘Trumpnesia’: Polling Young Voters On Controversial Trump Statements

“It might shock those of us who eat, sleep, and breathe politics, but young voters really don’t remember the daily controversies of the Trump years and grew up understanding this kind of rhetoric as politics as usual,” said Blueprint Lead Pollster Evan Roth Smith.

May 22, 2024

As part of a recent poll of young voters that identified their top issues related to the 2024 election, new data shows that these voters are unaware of some of Trump’s most offensive comments, including Trump’s 2016 Muslim ban and his infamous quote that there were “very fine people on both sides” following white supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. In this newly released part of the survey, Blueprint presented voters ages 18-30 with notable incendiary Donald Trump quotes, asking whether they remember these quotes and whether the quotes offend them.

Specifically, the poll found that fewer than half of registered voters under 30 years old say they had heard of Trump’s 2016 Muslim ban, his “very fine people on both sides”remark, or that John McCain “is not a war hero.” However, the majority of voters under 30 say they are offended by all of these quotes, including most others.

Notably, the Trump quotes that bother young voters the most are those that objectify women and vilify immigrants and one recent quote in particular at the Black Conservative Federation gala where Trump presumed that Black voters embrace him because of his indictments.

“It might shock those of us who eat, sleep, and breathe politics, but young voters really don’t remember the daily controversies of the Trump years and grew up understanding this kind of rhetoric as politics as usual,” said Blueprint Lead Pollster Evan Roth Smith. “Looking at these ‘heard of’ and ‘bothered by’ statements in tandem, Democrats can seize opportunities to resurface Trump’s most flagrant 2016-era instances of sexism, racism, and denigration of immigrant communities with young voters who have simply never heard them before. However, Trump’s more recent statements about the 2020 election and language that questions democratic institutions do not carry the same weight with this generation.”
